The 18th Annual New York Tartan Day Parade, on Saturday April 9th, is the area’s largest celebration of Scottish-American heritage, and its new Platinum Sponsor, Barbour Inc., the North American subsidiary of J. Barbour & Sons, Ltd. of Great Britain, today announced a special contest for Scottish and West Highland White Terriers.
A boisterous bunch of Scotties and Westies participate every year in the Parade – this year on Saturday, April 9 – trotting up Sixth Avenue alongside thousands of bagpipers, dancers, bands, clans, and families to the cheers of the crowd.
For the second consecutive year, Barbour Inc., a premiere British heritage and lifestyle clothing brand that also makes dog coats and accessories, will sponsor this “Tartan Dog Pack.”
And this year, Barbour will once again sponsor the “Win a Barbour Dog Coat Competition,” where 20 lucky Scotties and Westies will win their very own Barbour Tartan Dog Coat, to proudly wear as they strut (or march or waddle or lollygag) their happy way up the avenue!
The Tartan Dog Coat is constructed in Barbour’s iconic diamond quilted nylon. With an insulating 70g wadding, this canine coat is well-equipped to offer essential warmth, and features a smart corduroy collar that can be folded forward for extra protection in bad weather. An adjustable underbody strap and Velcro-fastening neck ensure a comfortable fit, while Barbour’s Original Classic Tartan print keeps four-legged friends looking stylish. Coats come in a full range of sizes, fitting toy dogs up to Great Danes.
To enter the competition, owners must first register their Scottish or West Highland White Terrier (and someone to walk them) in the New York Tartan Day Parade, at nyctartanweek.org.
Then, submit a photo of their terrier to info@nyctartanweek.org, explaining in 100 words or less why their adorable Westie or dignified Scottie deserves to win. Originality, humor and style count!
All entries must be received by March 23rd and winners will be notified by email by March 29th.
Please note that this contest is only for Scottish and West Highland White Terriers. Dogs of other Scottish breeds are welcome to march in other units. Visit the NYC Tartan Week website for details.
The Parade starts at 2:00 p.m. and marches up Sixth Avenue (Avenue of the Americas), from 44th to 55th Streets.

THE 18th ANNUAL NEW YORK TARTAN DAY PARADE: will take place on Saturday April 9th, stepping off at 2:00pm from 44th and Sixth Avenue.
In 1998 the U.S. Senate declared April 6 to be National Tartan Day to recognize the contributions made by Scottish-Americans to the United States. In 1999, two pipe bands and a small but enthusiastic group of Scottish Americans marched from the British Consulate to the UN-our first Parade! Since then, it has grown to include hundreds of pipers, thousands of marchers and many more thousands cheering from the sidelines.
