The recession has forced some deeply painful cutbacks for the people of New York. Raises for some government workers have been suspended. State parks might close. The city could shed 19,000 teachers and other employees.
And now this: Saturday’s Tartan Day Parade — “New York’s biggest celebration for pipers, drummers, Scottish music and single malt whisky” — is being cut.
Instead of stretching its traditional 13 blocks in Manhattan, the annual festival of bellowing bagpipes, kilted manly men and skittering fleets of Scottie and Westie dogs will be dispersing after a mere 10.
